WATCH: Spa Medical’s Micro-Needling Treatment

Has anyone ever told you that beauty is pain? While that might be true in some cases (waxing, anyone?), I was pleasantly surprised when I tried the Micro-Needling procedure at Spa Medical a few weeks ago.

I’ll be honest – I was really nervous about the treatment. In fact, I considered chickening out the night before! But by Saturday morning I rallied and was ready for my 8 a.m. appointment at the Macon office. (By the way, every time I step into the Spa Medical office I immediately want a nap – it’s that relaxing.)

As always, Carrie, Spa Medical’s esthetician, greeted me at the door and offered me a beverage while I filled out some paperwork. After going over the treatment one more time, Carrie and I walked back to the procedure room and got started. Once I got settled on the table, Carrie applied a numbing cream to my face and neck and let it sit for about 10 minutes before she started the treatment.

According to the Spa Medical website, Micro-Needling is a non-ablative procedure (meaning the top layer of skin is left untouched while still affecting deeper skin layers), that involves using a pen-like device with a tip of disposable needles to apply micro-channels to the skin. In other words, the needles create tiny holes that allow for a more effective way to infuse products into the skin, allowing those products to penetrate further into the skin layers.

So tiny needles. Making holes. In my skin. Sounds painful, right? Wrong! For the most part, I felt no discomfort whatsoever thanks to the numbing cream. My neck and forehead were the most sensitive areas – it felt like really rough sandpaper rubbing against my skin – but nothing painful, just a little irritating.

Micro-Needling is great for people with acne scarring and discoloration. Since it stimulates collagen growth, it can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improves the thickness and durability of the skin.

After the treatment, Carrie applied a sunscreen and told me to wash my face when I got home. She gave me a small vial of stem growth factors and hyaluronic acid and told me to apply both every hour until I ran out, which ended up being that late afternoon. Carrie told me that my face might be red for a few hours to a day after the procedure and that I might feel like I had a mild sunburn. The next day, my skin looked and felt great and any hint of redness was completely gone.
