Still Need a Dress for This Weekends Party? Read On:

Generally I have friends and contacts reach out to me rather last minute needing advice about an outfit like- pretty much NOW. Here are some basic tips:

1. Don’t panic!!! You can and you will find something that works. We all tend to get so much engrained in our heads what we want that we often can’t see what works right in front of us.

2. Be willing to improvise. This weekend in Macon, Georgia is the Roaring 1920’s party for Taste of the Arts to benefit the Arts Alliance. The basic shape of dresses in the 20’s is that of the shift dress. Everyone has something that will work, even if it’s a basic black A-line dress. Most outfits, when the dress or “main part” of the outfit, is kept really simple you can make it work with accessories. So, like for this weekend, long pearls (it’s ok if they are fake- especially since- let’s be honest- you will end up partying all night long, you don’t want to lose Grandma’s 100 year old pearls) and basic black shoes will work fine. Feel free to throw on a feather boa and some kind of headband. Even get creative and make something yourself.

with different accessories this dress at Karats and Keepsakes would work!

even this lacy dress at Rumor Boutique would work!

3. Be willing to be different. So you don’t have a flapper dress or a black shift A-line dress for this weekend. So what? You DO have something that is super flattering and totally fabulous. Go with that.

Theme parties tend to be the most difficult, especially when faced with a lack of budget or you don’t live in or near a larger city. 1920’s parties are especially popular right now due to the release of the new The Great Gatsby movie. But you can also wear a dress that is closer to the 1930’s style, as the style of the 1920’s evolved at the end of that decade. 80’s themed parties are usually a little easier, and the 50’s are easy to work with due to full skirts constantly coming back in to style.

The biggest thing to remember is that even if you aren’t dressed in the theme or style of that party, as long as you look fabulous that’s really the only thing that matters. Looking fabulous and feeling great. Big cocktail function and you don’t have a dress? No biggie! Find a dark pair of jeans and jazz it up with a fabulous top. Or even a pair of satin or silk pants and a simple draped shirt. Throw on some excellent jewelry- pull your hair up and put on a large pair of stud earring or dangle earrings and you are instantly chic. Right now a big trend in makeup is to go with a neutral eye and bright lipstick. I am a BIG fan of M.A.C.’s Candy Yum Yum bright pink with a sparkly eye and strong black eye liner.

Above all- have fun!!!

Love to all yall,
