Southern Style Sunday: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

The holidays are undoubtedly my favorite time of the year; friends and family normally separated by the chaotic, hectic reality that has become the societal norm get to be together, festive parties brighten up the nightlife, colorful lights and decorations are in abundance, and there is that indescribable, almost infectious sense of cheer that seems to penetrate virtually every aspect of our daily lives. While the main events of the season are still a little ways away, there are fortunately a plethora of goings on in the Macon and Middle Georgia area this coming week to tide us over as we excitedly await Christmas Eve. Here are a handful of my top picks:

On Monday evening, The Moonhanger Group is throwing its 4th Annual Moonhanger Ball featuring DJ Bruce Wonder at the Cox Capitol Theatre. The event is free, open to the public, and a great way to show your support for the fabulous company and crew that brings the Macon restaurant scene quality establishments such as Dovetail, The Rookery, H&H Soul Food, and even the Cox Capitol Theatre itself. The event starts at 8:00PM, is 21 and up, features a variety of drink specials, and promises to counteract even the most terrible case of the Mondays with some holiday spirit.

On Tuesday, the Choral Society of Middle Georgia will be performing the first part of Handel’s “Messiah” with soloists and accompaniment by the Festival Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Stanley Roberts at St. Joseph’s Cathedral. The event starts at 7:30PM, and $10 tickets are available for purchase from a member of the Choral Society of Middle Georgia, chuber200@cox.net, or at 478-746-9688 extension 120.

Wednesday, the Nutcracker of Middle Georgia opens at The Grand Opera House. As the twin of someone who danced everything from Little Girl to Lead Butterfly, getting to see this rite of passage for the unbelievably talented young dancers in the area is a delight in and of itself. Pair that with Shelley Kuhen’s gorgeous costumes, breathtaking scenery, and masterfully executed choreography, and you have a holiday tradition that only seems to get more magical as the years go by. The production runs from December 10-14, and tickets ranging from $12-$22 are available online through Mercer Ticket Sales or in person at 400 Poplar St. Monday-Friday 10AM-5PM.

Thursday, the Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker is having its red carpet premiere. Though it bears some similarities to the Nutcracker of Middle Georgia in that it features the same music, storyline, and some of the same choreographic elements, this production which is set in the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Midtown Atlanta features the professional dancers of the Atlanta Ballet under the direction of the renowned John McFall. In addition to this special event, the ballet will also be holding a “Girl’s Night Out” event on Sunday, December 14th. Although this event normally comes with a $35 price tag (which is well worth the accompanying swag bag from StyleSeat, a complimentary cocktail from Publik House, and admission to the performance itself) one lucky reader will be receiving TWO VIP passes to the event!

Friday, Theatre Macon’s production of Cinderella will be in full swing. Directed by the incredibly dynamic duo that is Jim Crisp and Jim Penndorf, with even more beautiful costume designs by Shelley Kuhen and imaginative choreography by Colby Marshall-Zampa, this is a must-see event for the whole family. Cinderella, which opened this past Friday, picks back up on December 10th and runs through the 14th. Tickets range from $15-$25 and are available online at theatremacon.com, over the phone at 478-746-9485, or at the door.

While these are only a small sampling of the events that are going on in the area, I hope that these holiday happenings brighten up your week and get you in the spirit of the season!
