Something New: The Rookery

While I was at the Macon Film Festival, I had the incredible opportunity to eat at local restaurant, The Rookery. For any who have already experienced the classic restaurant, you know that the service is spectacular, and the food stupendous. But for those who, like me beforehand, have never eaten there before, you’ll definitely want to after you hear about it here.

Even though the workers were swamped with the large Film Festival crowd, the service by the waitress was still wonderful. Within minutes of my joining my party at a lovely outside table that allowed me to soak up the warm Georgia sun, I was asked for my drink order, and since I had already been looking over my menu, my food order as well.

If you’re looking for a good burger in downtown Macon, then The Rookery is your place. I ordered the Classic City Cheeseburger, which comes in at a very cheap $8.50. The burger is basically the Rookery Burger, but gives you the choice of cheese for an extra .50 cents. And let me tell you, the extra expense is very worth it, because cheese makes everything better.

But before I got my burger, I was treated to the market price Cheese Tray, pictured below:

I am a huge bread fan, and these crostinis were to die for. We ended up getting extras (for an extra dollar, again very worth it) and used them to compliment the cheese that had come with the plate. I tried the block cheese, which paired well with the butter-spotted bread.

After about ten minutes, I got my medium well-burger. What was even better than the burger were the obviously fresh-cooked french fries that came as a side (by my choice, there’s a side menu to choose from). The food was so good, and there was so much on the plate that I just couldn’t finish it all. Now that’s the sign of a great restaurant.

Later, I went to get something sweet, since there are no smoothie places in Macon. The Rookery is famous for its milkshakes, which are only five dollars for your flavor of choice. I went simple and got a vanilla milkshake, since at the time, they were out of the peanut butter ice cream for their famous Jimmy Carter milkshake. And let me tell you, it was one of the best milkshakes I had ever had.

So if you’re looking for good food at a great price, I would definitely recommend The Rookery! Next time I go, I’ll check out their steak, because I love steaks. What’s your favorite Rookery treat?
