Prepping for Girl Meets City: Behind The Scenes

There’s quite a bit of prep work that goes into our Girl Meets City series. And this next one, to Birmingham, will require even more. Because this time we’re bringing videographers along. Fun!

But what exactly does that mean? It means creating a call sheet, contacting businesses beforehand, letting them know we’re coming. Giving them our social media contacts, letting them know we will follow up in the future once the pieces are up, and keeping INBirmingham- their CVB- up to date on what we’re doing.

This includes booking hotel rooms, planning for food, for shopping, and other tourist attractions.

And as much work goes into it, it’s also a hell of a lot of fun. The hardest thing is narrowing down which places to go to, especially with a really cool city like Birmingham. A lot of the narrowing down simply comes down to logistics, times places are open, and even weather can be a factor.

If I could go everywhere in Birmingham it would actually make things a lot easier, but alas we can’t. So I try to fit in at least 2 coffee stops per day, because that’s real life for me and I have to have the caffeine, as well as the normal amount of food stops. Then at least one spa location, because I feel like any woman of my target demographic wants to know where she can get her nails or eyebrows or hair styled when she’s on a trip.

And the shopping is a must. Now, it’s a little harder when researching from afar. With Girl Meets Savannah I had my friend Melody Munn on hand who was from the area to take me around. And it didn’t hurt that most of our stops were all down Broughton. (Many of those shops have since moved around.) Originally I intended for Girl Meets City to be something Melody and I continued on together, but life turns as it does and she’s got a career that’s taking off tremendously with her husband which allows her to take much bigger journies. Check out her Instagram and you will see what I mean 🙂

So now I’m researching shopping on my own- but Instagram is also super helpful here and I’ve found a couple of places I know y’all will love. It also helps that I have friends who have lived in Birmingham before, specifically the lovely Nicole Thurston who is Executive Director of The Cannonball House- which I sit on the board of.

Then there’s the packing and deciding what to wear. There’s a formula here as well, and I’m picking items from cities featured in past Girl Meets City articles as well as items from Legacy Design and Living Truth Jewelry.

And this time I’m bringing a video crew, which means planning for their work as well.

As well as my girl friend, Georgia, to experience the fun.

That’s me, Georgia, Anthony, Brandon and Charles. It’s sure going to be an interesting trip, folks!

So, where will we go? Be sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter to see where we’re going- and then check back for the final post and VIDEOS here!

Love to all y’all,
