NYC Meets Southern Style: A New York Trip in Outfits

I can’t believe it’s only been a week since I left New York City. As much as I love living in the South, there’s just something about New York that speaks to my soul. Having said that, I knew I had to bring some of my own unique Southern Style to the Big Apple. Here’s my trip in my series of outfits:

 

The Airport

Why don’t people dress to fly anymore? Sure, I may have gotten a few weird looks from people in the Sky Club… I was determined to wear my compression hose and still be cute so I styled it with black shorts over them and a cute top with a frill from Rumor Boutique. Then also with some of my favorite jewels and a simple white jacket from Savannah.

 

 

 

Note: Yes, I hate bathroom selfies. But I was already getting looked at like I was Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman from the ladies in Sky Club. No damn way I’m asking them to take my photo for a fashion blog.

Dinner & Cocktails

 

Once I landed my lovely friend Carrie picked me up from LaGuardia and we whisked away to her 10th Anniversary of Moving to NYC Celebration at Donna in Brooklyn, a.k.a. my new favorite place in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. Cocktail and taco specials for just $12?! Hello!

The next day was a fun trip to go and meet the lovely people of Taylor Strategy, who I’ve been working with for nearly two years for their Influencer program with Smirnoff and Diageo Brands. Their office is in The Empire State Building, so we got to scoot past all of the tourists in the lobby, grab a quick Starbucks, and head on up to the top for a VIP Tour.

The next day Carrie & I found ourselves at The Metropolitan Museum of Art for the China: Through The Looking Glass exhibit. I knew that anything curated by Anna Wintour would be amazing. From The Met’s website:

” This exhibition explores the impact of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. In this collaboration between The Costume Institute and the Department of Asian Art, high fashion is juxtaposed with Chinese costumes, paintings, porcelains, and other art, including films, to reveal enchanting reflections of Chinese imagery.

From the earliest period of European contact with China in the sixteenth century, the West has been enchanted with enigmatic objects and imagery from the East, providing inspiration for fashion designers from Paul Poiret to Yves Saint Laurent, whose fashions are infused at every turn with romance, nostalgia, and make-believe. Through the looking glass of fashion, designers conjoin disparate stylistic references into a pastiche of Chinese aesthetic and cultural traditions.

The exhibition features more than 140 examples of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear alongside Chinese art. Filmic representations of China are incorporated throughout to reveal how our visions of China are framed by narratives that draw upon popular culture, and also to recognize the importance of cinema as a medium through which to understand the richness of Chinese history.”

 

 

Among The Couture 

Of course we had to start with our photographs on the steps of The Met, where the ladies of Gossip Girl would eat their lunch.

 

 

Note: If you ever go to The Met, be sure to pick a day when they have their rooftop terrace open. The views of the city are breathtaking, and if you don’t mind paying over $10 for a cocktail you can partake of those as well.

And for my last day in the city, Carrie took me to brunch at Rye Restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

 

Southern Style Meets New York City Brunch

 

One thing NYC has over on us Southerners for sure is being able to partake of cocktails before 12:30 pm. There’s this whole Brunch Bill that passed the House in the State of Georgia but got stalled in the Senate. No big surprises there I suppose, why would we want to make more money? But that’s a whole other post….

 

 

Gotta love the juxtaposition of this shirt with the china coffee cups. So much of this restaurant screamed traditional Southern style with their silver service settings, china coffee cups and more- while the Southerner in the room wore a t-shirt that said ” Dressed To Kill”: an item that might get me a thumbs up from NRA friends in the South and a side-eye glance from more liberal friends. Here it’s simply fashion, and one of my favorite lightweight shirts.

All in all, it was a lovely visit to New York City from this bona fide Southern lady. And I can’t wait to go back!
