I’m a Social Media Maven: A (Very) Brief How-To

I feel like I have grown up with Facebook and Twitter, along with other social media methods. Someone once told me I am a “Social Media Maven”. I would say this is accurate.

While I was at DealChicken, I managed upwards of 8 different Facebook and Twitter accounts across the country. When speaking for people in Des Moines- then don’t give a rip that I am Molly from Macon, Georgia. And I certainly can’t use “y’all” in a post. They will know the person speaking ain’t from these here parts. So, how did I get people from Des Moines and St. Louis and Washington D.C. to successfully interact with me?

It’s really rather simple. Social media is just that: social. It’s a matter of getting one’s voice and point across within a brief written word. I write like I talk, and while this drove my English teachers bananas in high school, I never lost that talent. And it translates perfectly in to social media.

I bet y’all thought it was going to be more complicated than that. And it can be- knowing how to use hashtags in Twitter and Instagram, how often to post on Pinterest, what content to share, hell HOW to write content people want to read… it can easily be overwhelming. I’m going to attempt to post more often on here about social media and how best to use it. However, keep in mind that while it changes from business to business- and essentially audience to audience- the very first rule is the simplest. Keep it social. Keep it fun.

Here is a great example that I saw while at the Digital Summit in Atlanta, presented by Twitter. A young lady posted about Oreo and Kit Kat on Twitter and the following resulted:

This is exactly what social media is intended to do. It levels the playing field between the average customer and larger brands, along with making small businesses and larger businesses equal players within the social media field.
