Fire Up Your Weekend with Fired Works!

You might not realize pottery can be so cool and fun and intricate… until you go to Fired Works.

I had the chance to check out their Preview Party last night and found several items that I want. A lot, actually.

Fired Works – Preview Party

Posted by Southern Bon Vivant on Friday, April 15, 2016

From the press release, the featured potters are Bill and Pam Clark, of Clark House Pottery in Greenville, South Carolina. I focused on a few of their items in the above video. They’re beautiful pieces of artwork with vibrant colors and these folded, ruffled and twisted details. They look almost more like fabric than fired clay.

They were inspired to learn this technique from the work of George Orr, of Mississippi, who many believe to be the forerunner to the abstract-expressionism movement in ceramics.

You might be wondering, what else is there to do besides look at and buy art? As if you needed more! But there is, actually.

There are free workshops for children with two different dates:

“If you ever wondered what will get a child to stop playing video games and go outside, we’re here to help.  Children will love getting their hands dirty on a beautiful afternoon in Central City Park. Fired Works offers Clay Workshops for Children on Saturdays during Fired Works. Professional ceramic artists will work with children ages 5-12 teaching them simple pottery techniques. Children will be able to create their own, original works of art to take home. Workshops last one hour, and class sizes are limited to 20 students. Reservations are required. Kids need to come dressed in attire that can get dirty. Clay Workshops are free thanks to generous support from the Elam Alexander Trust and Lizella Clay Company.”

There’s also the Wheel Turning Workshop:

“Maybe you have taken a pottery class or two, and want to try your technique on the pottery wheel? If so, you will enjoy a Spin the Wheel Workshop at Fired Works. Professional ceramic artists will teach you how to throw your own piece of clay on the pottery wheel. This is a great way to learn new techniques and create new experiences. A group of 6 will work with our professional ceramic artists on creating a beautiful wheel thrown piece of pottery. Please dress in attire that can get dirty. Tickets are $50 and include drinks, materials, and finished piece. Space is limited, so sign up early!”

And the Corks & Clay Workshop:

“You don’t have to know anything about making pottery to enjoy a Corks and Clay Workshop at Fired Works. These are just meant to be a good time with friends. Enjoy playing in the mud while having a drink on us. It’s a perfect date night for young couples or a group of friends who are looking for something a little different. Groups of 10 will work with our two professional ceramic artists on easy-to-learn projects. Please dress in attire that can get dirty. Tickets are $30 and include drinks, materials, and finished piece. Space is limited, so sign up early!”
