A Farmer, A Larder, and a Whole Lotta Good Food

What do you do when everything looks amazing? EAT IT ALL!!!

The food is superb. The space is quaint and lovely. And the prices will make your eyes practically fall out. And the food is superb, to say the least.

I’ve eaten in a lot of places, in a lot of different cities, and all types of food. There’s still something so special about what is happening in the South that is unlike anywhere else.

Suffice it to say, The Farmer & The Larder is one of my new favorites. If you ever go to St. Simons Island, Jekyll, Sapelo or anywhere in between PLEASE keep reading because this is a place that must be on your permanent list.

I first connected with Chef & Co-Owner Matthew Raiford on Facebook- I think because of The Dirt Farmers or a connection with Robinson Home. Either way, I’m glad of it because thanks to the social media connection I had his spot on my radar for a little while once I finally made it in.

The space isn’t very big, but it’s welcoming. The tables are close together in spots but much like any place in the South you usually end up talking to your neighbors anyway. It was fortuitous this time because I got to see the lovelies that my left-handed neighbors ordered and knew I had to have it.

But first- how to start? I asked my server if she would go with the biscuits and gravy OR the charcuterie board. It wasn’t long before this trip that I was in Montreal and charcuterie abounds up there. The server said the biscuits and gravy were to die for, but she questioned my ability to down that item AND order an entrée. Oh, she of so little faith!

Thankfully I was there with my mom and she’s always game to try new things with me. We decided to get the traditional Southern treat to split, while also ordering French press coffee and mimosas. Except I had the coffee, mimosa, and a bottled water (I’m allergic to the sulfur in the tap water down there).

This version of biscuits & gravy are made with white gravy, peppers, mushrooms, onions and sausage.

Mom ordered the Beets & Greens: roasted red beets, goat cheese, roasted nuts & honey lemon vinaigrette over mixed greens. Lucky me she let me try a bite. Just one. But one was enough for me to know how amazing is truly is. Beets are not my favorite but I would totally order these on my own.

I got the glorious Farmhouse Burger: a beef, pork & chorizo burger topped with sunny side up egg & sautéed greens. It was beautiful and glorious and tasty and everything a burger should be and more. The Rookery in my home town is known for their burgers- but this one rivals even them. And I know I’m staking a lot by saying so.

OH and the dessert! This amazing chocolatey creation- I didn’t take notes and I can’t remember what it was but I do know I practically rolled out of there because we couldn’t leave it on the plate.

There’s something really special about good food. For me, it’s quite nearly a religous experience. And when I run across people who clearly pour their hearts and souls onto the plates for little ol me and everyone else… I just feel incredibly blessed.

This is a place that you must go to. I swear by it.

Love to all y’all,

Molly
