Eating Along the Atlanta Streetcar Line

It’s no secret I love to eat. I’m quite lucky I don’t weight 300 pounds, actually. This particular trip to Atlanta I was staying downtown and really wanted to get out and about and try some new restaurants. My original plan was to take an Uber car, and I can’t exactly remember why I changed my mind but once I realized that the Atlanta Streetcar would come right outside my hotel I decided to go with that. It was free and a streetcar sounded really cool.

 

Note: I had in my mind that the Atlanta Streetcar would be like a trolley car. Not the case, but once I got in and rode around I realized this was likely for the best. Once inside the streetcar I had to figure out where I wanted to eat, the places I had scoped out ahead of time were not on the streetcar line. A quick Google search would pull up a Zagat article about the best places to eat on the streetcar line. SCORE.

 

The first place I was listed was the Sweet Auburn Curb Market and Grindhouse Burgers. Awesome. Done. Oh but wait- they closed in the afternoon. Wait, all of the places in the market closed in the afternoon. Really? And the only places open late seemed to not be exactly on the streetcar line but around various corners. By this point in time it was dark and since I’m not familiar with downtown Atlanta I didn’t want to go traipsing around in the dark when God only knew when the next streetcar line would come by. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

 

At this point I’ve done a full loop on the streetcar line. No one has bothered me. The car is full, so I’m thinking hey this is a win for public transit even if my stomach lost. Fine. But I did make sure to go by the Sweet Auburn Curb Market the next afternoon.

 

I had no idea what to expect when I went in. There was SO much food, so many different kinds. I was determined to sample as much as possible and I still didn’t get everything that I wanted. Fresh produce, even a place where you could get pig heads. I met a gentleman from Ireland who was very excited about his pig head, although disappointed that it was frozen and not fresh, so he could make some headcheese. (No thank you.)

I knew i wanted a burger from Grindhouse Killer Burgers, since Zagat talked about them. It’s always nice to run across just a really good, simple burger. Of course you can order it with all kinds of toppings but I got it with just cheese and ketchup.

 

Next I walked over and made a friend, Mike, who was playing the piano.

 

I really wanted to stop at the crepe restaurant counter, but I knew I couldn’t take that to-go so easily so my next stop was Panbury’s Double Crust Pies. They have sweet fold over pies but also savory pies. Here in the South you might call it a pot pie. The Green Thai Chicken Curry Pie was my savory choice and I really didn’t eat it until the next day but it was amazing warmed up in the oven. My sweet fold over was Blueberry and I had to restrain myself from eating it right then and there. So so so so good.

And then I knew I had to stop by Sweet Auburn Barbecue. Partly because I met one of their chefs, Tiny, as I first came through but also because…. well…. Barbecue. Amazing pulled pork, smashed sweet potatoes, and their special mac n’ cheese. I’d really like some more of that mac n’ cheese, honestly, and I’m kind of weird about my mac n’ cheese.

 

I’m definitely going back to this market soon- especially for the fresh juice bar!

Oh but wait, where did I end up eating the evening before? Well there was one place that was open no matter how late….
