Easy Artsy Watercolor Painting Collage

I know a lot of you don’t like to use  watercolors because they are too hard to control and you can’t erase, etc.  Today’s art project teaches a beginning simple watercolor technique and a little about color.

Supplies:

8 color box of watercolors– I like to use Prang but they can stain clothes. Crayola washable watercolorsshould wash out of clothes (if washed in coldwater) but as paint they can be light in color.  These can be bought at many store from the big box stores, grocery stores to arts and crafts stores.

1 nice size round camel hair brush– not the synthetic skinny ones that come with some watercolors- Try to get a Crayola #6 or #8.

1 sheet of watercolor paper– Watercolor paper comes in pads or sheets – buy watercolor pads for children and tear out one sheet at a time. Watercolor paper has weight-the best to use is 140 lb which is heavy enough to keep from curling too much.  It is also either cold press or hot press or rough. Get cold press- not as rough as Rough sized paper. Hot press is very smooth.

1 sheet of 9×12 construction paper any color

Covering for the work area

Paper towels/sponge to clean and dry brush

1 container of water

Scissors

Pencil

Optional– hair dryer, water spray bottle with water

Directions:

Mist the watercolor paper lightly with water. Wipe excess water up with paper towels or sponge.

Wet the watercolors with water to make liquid paint-misting the watercolors with a water bottle sprayer is convenient and ideal for keeping the watercolors wet.

Dip the brush in the water, dry on paper towels or sponge.

Dip the brush in yellow paint and paint a blob shape on the paper . Let it spread a bit.

Wash the brush and dry.

Dip the brush into red paint and paint a blob shape close to the yellow and let it mingle with the yellow to create some orange.

Continue dipping and painting blobs and mingling colors together to discover which color combinations make which colors.

When finished, either set the paper aside to dry or dry with the hairdryer.

When dry, turn it over to the white side.  Draw nice large animal body shapes like a round head, oval ears, roundish/ovalish body, long ovals for legs/ arms, circles for paws.

Glue down in place with the glue stick.

Add anything else such as grass with any leftover watercolor paper.
