Easter Fashion Essentials: Southern Style

There are a few things that I have gotten right about Easter Fashion ever since I was a child.

1
Wear a dress: I think that until a lady reaches a certain age, and maybe even regardless, that a dress in either white or a pastel color is an Easter dressing essential. If you aren’t going to wear a dress, wear a skirt suit.

Pearls: Easter is one of those days that pretty much calls for pearls no matter what. Pearls are a Southern Style staple anyway, and Easter is one of those days that seems to really bring out the South in each of us.

The Moon and Lola Southern Living Glass Pearl necklace is a great example of a modern cluster of pearls strung along with a gold chain as well as a monogrammed pendant:

3
Derby Hat: Derby Hats don’t just have to come out on Derby days- in fact I’m a fan of wearing them whenever one can. I used to wear a hat to church even when I was a child, especially on Easter.

OR- if you don’t have a Derby Hat go with a Fascinator:

Bow Ties: On to the men! I’m a huge fan of men, and boys, wearing bow ties. Vineyard Vines makes a great tie for boys:

Seersucker Suits: YES. I love a man in a suit to begin with but make it a seersucker suit and it immediately evokes the image of the Southern lawyer ala Matthew McConaughey in “A Time To Kill” or Gregory Peck in “To Kill a Mockingbird”. They’re also just precious on boys from, like, newborn age until about 3 or 4. Once they get older it’s still cute but let’s face it- any mother will be too busy making sure their boys don’t get dirty, which is impossible. So from about age 4 or 5 until 12 just hold off.

The other great thing about seersucker is that you can later pair the jacket with dress shorts, or colored slacks, wear with or without a tie, pocket square, and more. You can even make it hipster-cool-ironic with a fedora from the Goodwill and suspenders and some old loafers. Which can sometimes also cross over in to College-Guy-Frat-Guy-Cool look.

For me, seersucker suits definitely do it- my first “boyfriend” captured the heart of 4-year old me when he walked in to Sunday School in a seersucker suit.

Basically, Easter is a time in the South to bring your “A game”. Think of it as the dry run for that next afternoon wedding you will inevitably be invited to, because someone somewhere in the South WILL HAVE an afternoon wedding and until late November- it’s going to be hot outside and you will need that cooler fabric- unless it’s an evening wedding.

Are YOU ready for Easter? What are you going to wear?
