The Doux Comes to Macon: Hair for Black Women

I’ve had the conversation with some of my African-American friends about their hair and I’ve learned a lot about the history behind why some people get weaves, relax their hair, or go natural. (Note: a lot of it traces back to many blacks in our country feeling like “being black” isn’t beautiful and trying to “pass for white”. I’ll address that another time.) I generally am hesitant to write about this because it’s an issue that I don’t deal with, however I’m more than happy to have a guest writer to come here and write about it.

For the time being, we won’t get in to all that. But what I can tell y’all is that I have a curious new follower on Instagram: The Doux Salon Macon.

I literally had to pull over in Ingleside Village and inspect my newest follower, I would comment asking for them to email me with more info. Now, I haven’t heard back yet (I’m sure they’re busy) but I decided to do some investigating. Their IG account says they’re coming to Macon on Cherry Street, and the comments on photos show they already have a following.

Upon looking over their Facebook page and website, http://www.thedoux.com, it appears that The Doux was founded a couple of years ago by Maya Smith and is a hair care line for African-American women. With even further digging through photos on their Facebook page I noticed one of them was tagged as taken at “The Honeycomb: A Maya Smith Hair Lounge”. Click through to that and find that this is a hair salon in Germany, and they said this:

“Dear HoneyComb Family,

In preparation for the stateside opening of The DOUX Salon, our beloved HoneyComb will be officially closing over the next few weeks.”

Needless to say, I’m excited. It appears that Ms. Maya Smith is bringing a high end salon, targeted towards African-American women, to downtown Macon. She’s got her own line of hair care products, and all of the photos are beautifully shot and she has a clear marketing vision.

Now, why are those things important to me? Because it’s clear her vision is different from ANYTHING we have here in Macon. Her branding is clear and unique and has kind of a du-wop feel, it reminds me of salons I’ve seen in Atlanta and Athens. And the fact that she’s had an established business before is awesome because it means she picked us and her location with a purpose- in the field of economic development, stability is key.

So while I don’t have any official statements from The Doux salon, they are posting frequently on Instagram and are clearly excited to come to Macon. Go give them a follow! Also- I did see- while they are clearly targeting hair for black women, they commented on their website stating their products are great for caucasian women as well 🙂

Love to all y’all,

This is actually pretty exciting for so many reasons: 1) because it’s a high-end salon for African-American ladies in the community, 2) because it’s upscale, and will bring yet another “touch of class” to downtown, and 3) because I’m looking forward to trying out some of their products, being that my hair is absolutely crazy to deal with, and I have to use tons of products. Because my hair is amazingly thick, I’d love to try out the products for you. I’m looking forward to seeing this salon open! Keep up the great work, and keep us updated on this.

I have heard and seen pictures (on FB) that they also cut white hair, just saying. I doubt if they want to be categorized as anything but a great new blowout salon!

Very true! I actually wrote this before I had the chance to go in and meet the new owner. I’m hoping to have a follow up interview post soon 😉
